Balancing of the energy of Hina (female) and Ku (male) in traditional Hawaiian ritual and protocol, this retreat takes you on a journey from the basics of lua to the foundation of hula and hands on training in Ka Pa Ola lomi lomi massage. This lomi lomi style is based on the principles of lua, the martial art form of Polynesia, which prepare one to fight so that one does not have to fight. Lua, like the information in the workshop is based on an intelligence beyond the intelligence of reading and writing:, an intelligence based on observation and participation. This workshop explores how the moves and principles of lua became the foundation of hula and lomi lomi and offers a hands-on learning opportunity in lomi lomi.

This workshop is for anyone who is serious about wanting to explore the richness of Hawaiian tradition and protocol. It will offer you basic information about the principles of lua, daily hula activities and hands on experience with the diagnosis of the body and the healing art of lomi lomi.

Hawaiian values are based on the principle of balance. For every god there is a goddess, for every land animal, there is a marine counterpart, for every mountain plant there is a oceanside plant. The first spirit created was female and from this spirit came the male. The female was given the aspects of love and compassion and she taught it to the male. If the male learned it well, he learned to use his gifts of physical prowess to protect her and within the union was kindness and politeness and the willingness to fight and protect.

In this five day retreat Kumu Bright and Kumu Andrews bring the aspects of Hina and Ku, the feminine and the masculine to offer you a balanced experience in lomi lomi and Hawaiian tradition.
